What is Physical Therapy?
Physical Therapy is a service delivered by a licensed Physical Therapist or
Physical Therapist Assistant to individuals to help develop, restore and maintain maximum movement in the body over a patient’s lifespan. Physical therapists also can recommend and fit a patient for adaptive equipment such as othrotics/prosthetics, sport braces/supports, walkers, canes, strollers, wheelchairs, specialized seating, and bath systems. Physical Therapists can use a variety of manual techniques such as traction, joint mobilizations and massage, modalities such as E-Stim and Ultrasound, as well as strengthening and cardiovascular equipment to achieve the desired goal of therapy.
What is a physical therapy evaluation?
The physical therapy evaluation will be conducted by a licensed Physical Therapist who can assess the following depending on the diagnosis: muscle strength, muscle tone, active and passive range of motion, neurological/sensory testing, balance/equilibrium/reflex testing, pain tolerance/scale, trigger point assessment as well as postural alignment. The Physical Therapist will also take a detailed account as to what type of injury/disability the patient is experiencing. Using all of the above information the patient and the therapist will develop a treatment plan and goals. The patient is a VERY important part of this process, as if the patient does not feel the goals are realistic, or appropriate for them, they will not be achieved. The number one goal of therapy is to return the patient to their prior level of function whatever that may be if possible, the patient is the most important part of that. This is a team effort.
